Brad & Angelina 1963 Photos

These photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were shot for W Magazine in 2005, but I just came across them now. Pitt teamed up with photographer Steven Klein and decided to set the photos in 1963, the year he was born. The results are pretty awesome.

Designgive: Cause for design

Designgive has some great t-shirt designs, all of which donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity of the buyer's choosing. If my t-shirt drawer wasn't already overflowing, I'd be all over that Hendrix one.

Mr. T Challenge for Diabetes

I pity the fool who don't donate to diabetes research. Apparently, that's what Beard Crumbs contributor Chris "LudaChris" Mischler was thinking when he decided to grow a beard, dye his blond hair black and sculpt it into the bad-ass Mr. T look you see above. Chris has even pierced several holes in his ears and got a small "I Pity The Fool" tattoo on his arm, all in the name of diabetes research. The transformation continues with new donation challenges each step of the way. Next up, he needs to raise $7,500 by Nov 23 for a portrait of Mr. T to be added to his arm tattoo.

See more pics and donate to the cause at www.mrtdiabeteschallenge.com.

MoveOn Obama Shirt

The progressive nonprofit group MoveOn.org is initiating a massive program to register half a million young voters in swing states. Since the majority of young voters support Barack Obama, bringing more of them into politics would make a huge difference for him in this election. By donating $12 or more to their efforts, you will receive this bad-ass union-printed American Apparel Obama shirt.

And as long as you've got your credit card out, you might as well throw a few bucks towards the disaster victims through the American Red Cross.

No Logo Branding

Outdoor apparel company Nau talks about their sustainable design philosophy and how consumers are ready for clothes without logos... Interview at TreeHugger.

Update: Nau is now dead. Maybe they should've sported some logos after all. Or just not have been so damn expensive.

Double update:
Nau back by popular demand.

Hand Job

Designer Mike Perry has compiled the hand-drawn work of 55 type designers in his book titled Hand Job: A Catalog of Type (available on Amazon). Perry himself has some wonderful (mostly hand-drawn) work on his site, midwestisbest.com.

If you couldn't tell by his domain name, Perry (originally from Kansas, now in NY) is clearly a fan of the Midwest. He's even created a blog dedicated to "the special makers whom make up the area between the coasts." As if all that wasn't enough, he also recently published another side project called Untitled (a fashion) Magazine.

How the hell do those pretty pictures end up on your t-shirts? Here's how!

It's not quite as dramatic as the Aesthetic Apparatus screenprinting video, but still nice. Facial Hair Shirt available at Wire & Twine.

The Story of Stuff

Here's something you should really watch before your next trip to the mall. Much like the post below on global warming, a large complex issue is explained in a friendly and concise manner. Here, Annie Leonard takes it up a notch with her 20-minute animated presentation on consumption, sustainability, and the materials economy. Watch it now at www.storyofstuff.com.

Site design by Free Range Studios, an agency that specializes in social and political messages.

Björn Borg Underwear

Björn Borg, the Swedish tennis star who dominated the game in the late 70's is back. Transforming his trademark style (fashion muse to Richie Tenenbaum) into official fashion mogul status, he brings us a new line of men's and women's underwear. They'll even send your old "not sexy" underwear to the warmonger of your choice. Not a bad website, either. Check it out.

OBEY Shepard Fairey

"There is a great quote from John Paul Getty -- 'Formula for success: Rise early, work hard, strike oil.' Our next artist, Shepard Fairey did just that. With persistence that has been described as obsessive Shepard's seemingly ubiquitous Obey Giant campaign struck a nerve and catapult him into what some have described as the godfather of American street art. Joining me on stage, please welcome Shepard Fairey."

This video is from the recent QBN Sessions,
a design lecture series organized by QBN (makers of Newstoday and Krop). If you missed last year's more in-depth discussions with Perry Ferrell and Shepard Fairey, be sure to check them out at Lolla Lives.
