Brad & Angelina 1963 Photos

These photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were shot for W Magazine in 2005, but I just came across them now. Pitt teamed up with photographer Steven Klein and decided to set the photos in 1963, the year he was born. The results are pretty awesome.

Swiss Army Bicycle

Have you ever seen anything cooler than this Swiss military bike? I highly doubt it. And if so, you better show me.

More coolness at La Rueda Tropical.

North Peak & Grizzly Peak Beers

Here's some fine old-timey beer packaging and poster designs by my brother Luke, as part of creative duo Neatly Trimmed Beard. North Peak and Grizzly Peak beers can be found this summer in the Northwoods of Michigan. I haven't tried them yet, but by the looks of things, these beers could probably kick the crap out of Leinie's fruity ass.

ROOT

Do you like root beer, but wish it actually got you drunk? You might want to try Art in the Age's new organic liqueur ROOT, an 80 proof "root tea" based on a recipe from the 1700's. This is the real deal, folks.

Space Race

Today is the 40th anniversary of the Moon landing. Jason Kottke has a nice roundup of all things Apollo 11-related on the web. The New York Times has a cool photo/video slideshow of all the amazing things that happened in 1969 pop culture. And our friends at TreeHugger ask if the Apollo project can teach us anything about what we should do about today's environmental problems.

Album art "Cover Versions"

A very similar concept to the "I Can Read Movies" collection posted a while back... Someone went and reimagined the covers art of these albums as if they were released by Pelican books in the 60s/70s.

Many more of these on Flickr.

Aaron Draplin: America is F*cked... (graphically at least)

I saw this video a while back of Portland-based designer Aaron Draplin ranting about a shitty motel sign and how people just don't appreciate good design anymore. Since then, I've been checking out his work quite a bit and must say he has quickly become one of my current favorite designers. His work all has a great retro-modern industrial look to it. And I think he likes the color orange...

Click images for details on each piece. For more examples of Aaron's work, take a look at the Draplin Design Co website. Also, if you've got extra some time, check out his recent interview with The Marma Spot.

Update: Another Draplin interview.

Eames Lounge Chair debut

Here's a slice of design nerd heaven. In this video from 1956, Charles and Ray Eames discuss their creative process and introduce one of my all-time favorite chairs, the Eames Lounge Chair.

Look Around You: Water

This British "educational" program on water nearly made me piss my pants.

Check out the whole series.

Spacesick: "I Can Read Movies"

These things are beyond awesome. Some designer who goes by the name Spacesick has reimagined several cult movies (some of my absolute favorites above) as vintage paperback covers from the 50's and 60's. Top notch!

Shepard Fairey moves to "Money"

It's no Pink Floyd, but this is another nice "Money" by a duo named N.A.S.A., featuring David Byrne, Chuck D, Seu Jorge, and a very topical subject matter. The video sets to motion the artwork of Shepard Fairey, who ironically (or hypocritically) makes a good living selling anti-capitalistic propaganda.

Fairey enraged fans when, following his Obama "Hope" poster fame, he went on to design tongue-in-cheek catalogs and shopping bags for Saks Fifth Avenue...

The Saks work was inspired by the bold Russian Constructivist art of Alexander Rodchenko in the 1920's. More on this at The New York Times.

Watch "Money" in high-res here. Thanks to Little Eric for the link.

Smokey Bear is alive and well

Smokey Bear is probably the single greatest ad campaign animal mascot of all time. And now he's voiced by the great Sam Elliott.

3-2-1 Contact: Architecture

This song will officially be in my head for the next week. I love the (mostly negative) commentary that starts around 0:45. And David with the I-beam? Brilliant.

Are these damn things almost ready? More spacey-ness here.
