So, The Flaming Lips were in Portland the other day. They were there filming a music video on Mt. Tabor, and it just so happens that Portland's own master designer and huge Lips fan Aaron Draplin was there with his camera. More photos here.

Brad & Angelina 1963 Photos

These photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were shot for W Magazine in 2005, but I just came across them now. Pitt teamed up with photographer Steven Klein and decided to set the photos in 1963, the year he was born. The results are pretty awesome.

I think you are more perfect than Helvetica

I always dig these kind of "deep thoughts" pieces that designers put together. Although, I can't imagine anyone being more perfect than Helvetica. These come from TheVoiceThatSaid on Flickr.

American photographer Terry Richardson is "known for his uncanny ability to cut to the raw essence of whomever appears before his lens." Just be careful if you venture to his site and check out the raw essence of the Jackass guys.

America, redesigned

Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States. Be sure to take a look at the new WhiteHouse.gov website, which will be "a central part of President Obama's pledge to make his the most transparent and accountable administration in American history." Among other features, it has a blog, weekly video addresses, and a nice slideshow of presidents.
Also, don't miss The New York Times' great photographic series, Obama's People. And in case you missed it or want to see it again, here's the Inaugural Address.

Some sneaky bastard did a little Photoshop adbusting at a subway stop in Berlin. And here I thought Britney was flawless. Boy, do I have egg on my face.

Schtock Images

An anonymous image cataloger at a stock photo company recently began posting his (or her) amazing Photoshop collages to the amusingly named website, Schtock.
Clicking on "about this image" displays the stock images that were used to create each piece.
Update:
"Schtock was launched to look like a viral marketing effort put out by stock photography company, Corbis. Over 150 sites and 200,000 viewers later, it was revealed that the projects was in fact a faux-viral effort on the part of General Projects to show off our marketing and design thinking."

Cold War Kids - Second Album Teaser
So far, 2008 has been a pretty disappointing year in music. I can't remember the last new album that really got me going the way Cold War Kids' 2006 debut Robbers & Cowards did. Luckily, they're working on a second album due out this September. If it's half as good as their first, it'll likely be my pick for album of the year.
Cold War Kids also get bonus points in my book for having a graphic designer in the band, bassist Matt Maust. Check their site for a great ongoing photo/design journal.

Ben Gibbard Article
Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard wrote an essay for Paste Magazine about music, love, his idol Jack Karouac, and whatever else he felt like. Read the long version at Paste or the short version at Stereogum.
The new Death Cab album Narrow Stairs is out May 13... Yay!! Here's the video for the first stalkery single "I Will Possess Your Heart," which Gibbard admits is five minutes of build and then a three-minute song.
